Le Col’s windstopping gilet is a versatile extra layer for colder days in the saddle and it’s available in highly-visible bright orange, which is a rarity for the brand who tend to favour black.
Initial impressions
I’m a big fan of the gilet as an item of clothing. Too many layers of sleeves always gets me twisted and uncomfortable so being able to keep my core warm without constraining my limbs is always a great choice. This particular Gilet is from Le Col’s Pro range and is the only current gilet in their lineup – other than the very pricey Hors Categorie reflective number - that is available in a colour other than black. Since this will be an item primarily used on cold, gloomy days, brighter seems like a wiser choice.
As per Le Col’s norm, sizing is ‘Italian’ in perspective so, as an average height, average build cyclist, I’m an XL. In that size, the gilet is a snug, but not compressive fit, over a base layer and winter weight jersey. With that configuration and winter bib tights, I was plenty warm enough on a day which saw temperatures start around 6°C and barely made it to double figures.
The gilet is quite a sturdy weight material, similar in feel to Gore’s Windstopper fabric so it’s not easily packable if the day warms up, but when you know you’re in for a long, cold trek, it’s a great top layer. There are three pockets on the rear, which are deep and easily accessible.
I’ll update once i’ve had more time on the bike with this gilet.
