BMC RoadMachine 3

2023

“Off-White”.

Distance ridden: 2,000km

Okay, I’m a bit behind, and already a year, 2,000km and a trip to Mallorca into my BMC ownership experience. I’d seen this bike online and loved the look of it, but at five grand, it was comfortably outside of what I was looking to spend on a bike to replace my well-loved De Rosa. Seems like other people thought the same, because come end-of-season-sale time, Wheelbase had it marked down by over 30% and they only had it in my size. Fate, I decided, and after a bit of conversation with a very helpful chap called Aaron, the bike was mine.

I didn’t specifically want Di2. I’d had it on hire bikes and never really thought it was worth the financial difference over a decent mechanical setup. This was made during that weird changeover period, where mechanical Ultegra wasn’t a thing for quite a long time, and themn, with the money off, this model with Ultegra 8170 was starting to seem like a bargain.

The wheels it arrived with were BMC’s boggo alloy rims - tubeless ready, but with not much more that could be said about them. Initially, they were swapped out for my Zipp 303S, but those were soon snaffled by my wife, and some 404 Firecrests called out to me; the original stickers being replaced by far less subtle white ones after only a couple of outings.

Features.

Drivetrain.

There wasn’t much choice about these things in the 2023 range from which this bike was plucked, so Shimano Ultegra Di2 it is. I’ve since swapped the original 50/34 compact to a semi-compact 52/36 for a bit more top-end.

Wheels.

Once again, Certini have been the shop with the best wheel deals and a set of lovely Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels came to replace the lacklustre original alloy items..

These are wearing Continental GP5000S-TR 30mm tubeless tyres - the wheels are aero optimised for 28s, but I upsized for extra comfort, lower pressures and more faith in the tubeless setup!

I already had a gold headset spacer - a left-over from the Giant Revolt build, so continued the same gold accent theme here, to strong effect with the gold fleck in the white paint. Muc-Off tubeless valves don’t come in gold at the length I needed, so I used black ones with the gold caps pinched from my 303s.

Finishing Kit.

All the standard BMC bits and pieces at the moment, save for a custom headset cap I had made by Kapz. More on that later / elsewhere. I’m also considering the Supacaz gold fade bar tape to match the blingy accent theme I’ve got going on.
